Tarot, Oracle, and Angel Cards | Occult to Orthodoxy Series (Part 5) | Ep. 119

Tarot cards, oracle cards, and even “angel cards” are often presented today as beautiful tools for guidance, reflection, or connecting with the spiritual realm. While their imagery may be modernized and aesthetic, the spiritual reality behind them has not changed.

As someone who used these practices heavily during my years in the New Age, I understand why they are so appealing. I once pulled cards daily to set intentions, seek guidance, and make decisions. But through my journey to Christ and ultimately the Orthodox Church, I came to understand the spiritual dangers behind these practices.

Drawing from Scripture, Orthodox Tradition, and the Holy Fathers, let’s look at what the Orthodox Christian faith teaches about tarot, oracle, and angel cards.

What Tarot, Oracle, and Angel Cards Are

Tarot cards originated in the 15th century as playing cards but were later adapted for occult practices and fortune telling in the 18th century. They typically contain structured decks divided into Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, intended to reveal guidance about a person’s past, present, and future.

Oracle cards are similar but less structured. They are often marketed as tools for self-reflection, spiritual guidance, and personal growth.

Angel cards are essentially oracle cards rebranded with positive imagery and messaging. They claim to connect users with angelic or spiritual guidance.

Because these decks appear positive, beautiful, and harmless, many people assume they are simply tools for inspiration or reflection. But the deeper question is this:

When we attempt to access the spiritual realm through methods God has not given us, who is actually answering?

Why People Are Drawn to Them

Most people who use tarot or oracle cards are not intentionally seeking evil. In fact, many are sincerely looking for truth, comfort, and connection.

Common reasons people turn to these practices include:

  • Seeking meaning or purpose in life

  • Wanting spiritual experiences

  • Looking for guidance about the future

  • Feeling disconnected from traditional religion

  • Searching for support from something greater than themselves

Many people also come to distrust Christianity due to negative experiences with individuals who poorly represent Christ. Others simply struggle with the idea of surrendering their lives fully to God.

So instead of turning to Christ, they look for alternative ways to access the spiritual world.

The Orthodox Christian Perspective

God Forbids Divination

Scripture speaks clearly about practices that attempt to gain spiritual knowledge apart from God.

“Let no one be found among you who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft… Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
— Deuteronomy 18:10–12

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them.”
— Leviticus 19:31

“Should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?”
— Isaiah 8:19

These commands are not given to restrict us unnecessarily. They exist because such practices open doors to spirits that are not from God.

Spirits Can Act Through Tools — But Not the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit does not communicate through cards, symbols, or divination practices.

However, fallen spirits can manipulate circumstances and objects to imitate spiritual guidance.

St. John Chrysostom warned that consulting sorcerers or engaging in demonic arts leads to spiritual enslavement. He compared these deceptions to slave traders offering small treats to capture children. While demons may appear to provide temporary benefits, the ultimate result is harm to the soul.

He also warned that demons can mimic the voices of the dead or even loved ones in order to deceive people.

For this reason, the accuracy sometimes associated with tarot readings does not validate the practice—it reveals that spiritual activity may be involved, but not from God.

“Angel Cards” Are Not Guided by Angels

Some people believe angel cards are safe because they are supposedly guided by angels.

But Scripture warns:

“Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
— 2 Corinthians 11:14

Authentic angels serve God and appear only by His command for the sake of salvation. They do not communicate through games of chance or card readings.

Any spirit delivering messages through such practices is not a holy angel.

Seeking Hidden Knowledge Undermines Trust in God

Orthodox Christianity teaches that we walk the spiritual life through:

  • Faith

  • Prayer

  • Repentance

  • Humility

Divination replaces these virtues with something very different:

  • Control instead of submission

  • Divination instead of prayer

  • Manipulation instead of trust

  • Impatience instead of waiting on God’s timing

It becomes a counterfeit spirituality that trains the soul away from God.

How Divination Damages the Soul

The Holy Fathers warn that divination cultivates destructive spiritual habits, including:

  • Pride in possessing hidden knowledge

  • Curiosity about forbidden spiritual matters

  • Dependence on unholy spirits

  • Fear, anxiety, and obsession

  • A false sense of spiritual power

Ultimately, these practices turn a person away from trusting God.

My Personal Experience

During my years in the New Age, I used tarot cards frequently and devotedly. They seemed to provide clarity and encouragement.

But after God allowed me to see the reality of the spiritual warfare surrounding my life, the tone of those cards changed. The same spirits that once praised my sinful choices suddenly began delivering accusations and manipulation through the readings.

The deeper I became aware of their presence, the more they sought any open door—any sin or vulnerability—to continue tormenting and deceiving me.

This experience helped me understand the real cost of these practices.

What to Do If You’ve Used Tarot or Oracle Cards

If you have used these practices, there is hope and healing in Christ.

Practical steps include:

  • Repent and turn your heart fully back to God

  • Destroy the cards rather than selling or giving them away

  • Confess the practice in Holy Confession

  • Pray and ask for deliverance from spiritual influence

  • Bless your home with holy water

Repentance closes the door, and Christ fills the space the demons once occupied.

Replacing Divination with True Spiritual Life

Instead of seeking guidance through occult tools, Orthodox Christianity offers something far deeper.

Healthy spiritual practices include:

  • Reading Scripture, where we encounter the truth of God’s will

  • Daily prayer, communing with the Holy Spirit

  • Guidance from a spiritual father

  • Participation in the sacramental life of the Church

These practices bring true peace and transformation rather than spiritual confusion.

A Final Word of Hope

Tarot and oracle cards do not reveal God’s plans for our lives. Instead, they can open doors to spiritual influences that lead us away from Christ and away from salvation.

But no matter how far someone has gone into these practices, repentance restores what was lost.

When we turn back to Christ, He fills the space that the occult once occupied—and leads us into true freedom.
