Numerology & Angel Numbers EXPOSED | Occult to Orthodoxy Series (Part 6) | Ep. 120
Numerology and “angel numbers” have become extremely popular in modern spirituality. Many people believe that seeing repeating numbers like 111, 222, 444, 777, or 11:11 means that angels or the universe are trying to send them a message.
For those coming out of the New Age, angel numbers are often one of the hardest beliefs to let go of. They can feel personal, mysterious, and comforting—almost like God is sending signs.
But is this actually how God communicates?
From the perspective of Orthodox Christianity, the answer is no.
Let’s look at what numerology and angel numbers are, why they feel convincing, and what the Church teaches instead.
What Is Numerology?
Numerology is an ancient practice that treats numbers as spiritually significant and capable of revealing hidden information about a person’s life.
It appears in several spiritual and mystical traditions, including:
Pythagorean mysticism
Kabbalah
astrology
occult divination systems
modern New Age spirituality
Numerology teaches that numbers connected to your birth date, name, or recurring patterns can reveal things about your personality, destiny, or life path.
However, Scripture places practices like this into the category of divination.
In Deuteronomy 18, God forbids His people from practicing divination, interpreting omens, or using systems designed to uncover hidden knowledge about the future.
Numerology fits directly into this category because it attempts to decode spiritual meaning from numbers in order to guide decisions or reveal destiny.
How the New Age Uses “Angel Numbers”
In modern spirituality, numerology is often repackaged as angel numbers.
People are taught that repeating numbers are personalized messages from angels or the universe. For example:
111 means you’re manifesting your desires
222 means you’re on the right path
444 means angels are protecting you
777 represents spiritual awakening or alignment
11:11 is believed to be a portal or a moment to set intentions
People often look up these number patterns online and interpret them as guidance about:
their future
their relationships
major decisions
their purpose or “alignment”
While this may seem harmless, it is essentially divination through numbers rather than tarot cards or astrology.
Do Angels Communicate Through Numbers?
The idea that angels send messages through repeating number patterns does not come from Christianity.
In Scripture, angels communicate clearly and directly. Their messages are straightforward:
“Do not be afraid.”
“The Lord is with you.”
“Go here.”
“Do this.”
There are no riddles, puzzles, or secret codes.
The concept of angel numbers actually comes from occult numerology, spiritualism, and channeled teachings, not from the Christian tradition.
What About Numbers in the Bible?
Some people become confused because the Bible does contain symbolic numbers.
For example:
3 often points to divine witness and the Trinity
7 symbolizes completeness
12 represents the people of God
40 represents testing or preparation
However, these numbers function as theological symbols, not mystical codes.
Their meaning comes from God’s revelation in Scripture and is tied to salvation history. They are not intended to be interpreted as personal messages about our daily lives.
In other words, biblical numbers teach us about God’s story, not about decoding hidden signs.
Why Repeating Numbers Feel Meaningful
Many people feel convinced that angel numbers are real because they frequently notice repeating numbers.
There are two main reasons for this.
1. Human Psychology
Our brains are wired to recognize patterns, a phenomenon known as apophenia.
You may look at the clock dozens of times a day, but you only remember the moments when you see something like 11:11.
This makes certain numbers feel meaningful, even though it is simply how our minds process patterns.
2. Spiritual Counterfeits
The Church Fathers also warn against seeking supernatural signs.
Saints such as St. Paisios and St. Theophan the Recluse teach that when people begin looking for hidden signs or omens, they can become vulnerable to spiritual deception.
Demons often imitate spiritual experiences in order to encourage superstition and distract people from seeking God directly.
How God Actually Guides Us
In Orthodox Christianity, God does guide His people—but not through numerology or coded patterns.
Instead, God leads us through:
Scripture
the teachings of the Church
the Sacraments
Our spiritual fathers
Holy Angels & Saints
Our conscience
the quiet peace of the Holy Spirit
The Christian life does not require decoding signs or searching for hidden messages.
Christ Himself is the Way.
What If You Still Notice Repeating Numbers?
For people leaving the New Age, it’s normal to still notice repeating numbers from time to time.
The healthiest response is simple:
Don’t assign spiritual meaning.
It’s just a number.Turn your attention toward Christ.
And the ways we just mentioned He would guide you.Let it pass.
Don’t give it emotional energy.
If it’s something that has strongly influenced your thinking or decision-making, it can also be helpful to bring it up in confession.
The goal is not fear, but freedom from superstition.
Orthodox Christianity offers you far more than occult spirituality ever could. Here, you can come into a true relationship with the God who made you and knows what is best for your life and your future.
We don't need to know signs, we need to know Him. He will guide us and make our paths straight.
